For a while now I've wanted to spruce up the cam cover on the Supra. It's a big bit of plastic on top of the engine and really dominates the engine bay. For some reason Toyota decided that they would all look nice in a dark metallic green colour
So after buying some paint and sandpaper I decided to have a crack at it. I've never sprayed anything before so this had the potential to go very horribly wrong, but I think it's come out OK for a first go..
This is the cover after being washed in hot soapy water, and scrubbed thoroughly to get all the dirt and grease off of it.

And lightly rubbed down with 1200 grit for any scratches and the rest with the rough side of a washing up sponge just to key it.

With the first coat of hi-build primer on it, good for filling the imperfections

And then with another couple of coats on it, plus drying time

Then with a couple of coats of the final colour, a nice metallic gun metal grey

Unfortunately as I don't have anything as posh as a garage, the finish is very orange-peel like from doing it outside in the cold air :(
Still, it seems to be nicely covered and I'm quite pleased, just wish I had somewhere to do it where it was warmer for it and the wind didn't keep blowing things on to it!
Just need to give it some lacquer now :)

Well you've got to mix the hobbies, cars and photography ;) :D

Cheers dude, need to get some lacquer tomorrow to finish it off and then get it on the car!
You could flat the inperfections back once there is some lacqure on it, just use 1200-1500 wet and dry.
I love spraying things, dispite the results not always being the best with no garage/big shed to work in.
But soon i think i will be attempting a full car respray if i can find somwhere to store the nova.

Cheers Fella. The guide I followed from the Supra forum said not to flat the lacquer down but the paint before I lacquered it? I was a bit worried about doing I and over doing it though, especially as there's lots of raised bits and little nooks and crannies. What do you think?
And what about the wet and dry, do I use it wet or dry??

Looking good mate!
Whenever using wet and dry, best to use it wet.
If the bumps and stuff are REALLY bad, flat it back and maybe add another coat of paint if you go though, but personaly i think it looks good and the texture dont look to bad. Just lacqure it with 2 coats and then flat it back and polish.

Lovely, thanks for the advice :)
I'd been using the wet n dry, dry :innocent: I might have a go, but to be honest I quite like the effect it's got. It's not really bad just very slightly rough like texturered plastic. Might just lacquer it, especially as all the little raised letters and vents make sanding very awkward!

Looks fine to me, as said when its at the right stage you can always flat it back a little to get rid of some of the imperfections and I am confident it will look perfect
The textured look does look good, just lacqure it and dont worry about it :d
Looking good. Orange peel can be too much paint on in one go, poss too close on the spray can. We got a finer tip on the gun and that got rid of it but with the spray cans there is only one choice!
Though it looks good. Look out to see if the laquer reacts with the paint as well. The laquer can be quite a bugger and remains soft for a lot longer.
I can see you doing a whole car respray in the future too :eyes:

Well it did look great until I started with the lacquer :( It's totally buggered now and need to start again...
The lacquer was a cheapy can from a local motor factors and kept spraying intermittently, sometimes just air and then loads of lacquer and it's ruined the finish. Gonna have to start again, really annoyed with it as took quite a while and quite a few quids worth of paint :(
I was looking at the offside front wing of my Supra as it's got an awful touch up job on it, thinking I could probably have a go at it and if it comes out crap it's no big problem as it needs doing anyway. Never know, it might come out ok with a good finish. Not sure doing it with cans would be a great idea though.
