Well in july/augest last year i bought this little nova, it was sold as a non-runner thought to be fuel pump.

Paid £120 and while looking around it i realised just how solid it was, Very unusual for a mk2 nova!

Got it home and heres some pics of when i first got it:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0778.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0775.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0780.jpg

A few days later:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0939.jpg

I found out the running problem to be water in the fuel, Once i had drained it all it was fine.

Then a few months later i jumped at the chance of a new engine, so a 1.4 16v corsa sport engine was found. Unforantly it was holiday time, i was off to austraila. So my brother stepped up and said he would do it, at first i laughed, He was only 15. But with help from a few friends the engine was fitted by the time i got back, Although there was a fault with the ecu and it didnt run and there was still many things to crack on with.

Some pics, not many as id like to keep this short!
As can be seen i done a few mods before this:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1332.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1338.jpg
But anyways:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1339.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1340.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1341.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1388.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1387.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1575.jpg

4months after the engine came out the car was back on the road. After getting through some small faults it was great... For a day or two.

First off the water pump died, so the car swallowed £100 for a cambelt kit, then a week later i noticed the flywheel end crank seal had gone. Great!.
So it went from this:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1629.jpg
To this:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1635.jpg
To this:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1641.jpg
And heres the fubard oil seal
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1642.jpg
Put it all back in, forgot pics though.

A week later i got it lowerd at last:
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1659.jpg
And here it is what i thought was finished (Ok it needed a new ICV and some other stuff)
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1667.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1668.jpg

But now just 6months after the project started, its starting again.

Ive decided to take it off the road, rebuild the engine, strip the shell and repaint it and turn it into more a show car. Somthing different though.

Its going to be expensive, but i guess il have to keep quite (Dont tell the misses!)

All the work carried out over the next year or so will be added here as and when. Theres loads of stuff ive missed but its a lot for not even a year ownership!

Cheers for taking the time to read this little story of my mia ma nova :)

Looking at this I have to ask youi nova guys if you've seen a burgandy red nova going around with a full genuine wide bodied irmscher kit, macca knows what the car looked like, must find a photo. It is a one off car that we had. We bought it as we had the kit lying about. J plate if I remember

I think it too has a larger engine in it?

AW09
08-15-2009, 09:44 AM
Certainly dont know of any red ones, infact i can only think of two and there both white and always have been lol

macca
08-15-2009, 12:30 PM
Nice little thread, thanks for sharing! Have to say those five spokes look massively better than the 3-spoke wheels, they really change the look of the car!

That Irmscher Nova of yours Ang, it was a beaut :D

Ang
08-15-2009, 09:55 PM
Down in portsmouth and still running, embarassing but sooo cool. :D That bodykit was something else, no wonder it sold fast!

macca
08-16-2009, 09:19 PM
Can't disagree there :D

AW09
08-17-2009, 01:26 AM
Aye the 5spoke tigra wheels really do change it.

And im not suprised it sold quick with that kit.

But the real reason i came on here.... I might be getting rid, kinda found another nova i REALLY like... Seems a shame to give up this one but i guess its time to move on?

Then again i could keep it and do what i want to it, but i always wonder if its really worth it.

Damm i need a mk1 nova in my life!

Steve
08-17-2009, 02:04 PM
Can't blame your for wanting a mk1 mate, you know it makes sense! Depends what you'll be doing to it though and how carried you'll get with modifying it, I still don't know why you want to sell this one after you've just got it the way you want it. But its your choice and if you you've found a better project then it makes sense to go forth with that!

AW09
08-17-2009, 02:17 PM
Deffo, really want a mk1 nova back in my life.

Thats the thing, this car would be a shame to mod..

Think ive made up my mind, keep my nova and buy a mk1 as soon as mony permits.

Nice write up, so many different ways to mod the Nova's from the look of the ones on here!

AW09
09-20-2009, 12:17 AM
Well the nova hasnt moved much latly, i used it once on the 15th (the day the MOT ran out), and it was great and kinda revived the love of it.

Ive decided on the colour, its a 1 off that will cost me a lot, parly due to me needing to have a fair amount spare for any cockup's or stone chips etc in the future.

Engine il be going for a Nova SRi engine (Thats a 1.4 8v MPi, Same that is fitted to some corsas and astras), it will get a full rebuild too. I dont expect this project to be over any time soon, or indeed the end of 2010. 2011 car i think :)

Interior will stay the same. Outside will change slighty though, il be buying a mint front bumper, side skirts and a GSI rear bumper to match.

Undersealing will get done everywhere underneath, rear beam will be acid dipped and powercoated, the fuel tank will be painted, as per all the tiebars/lower arms, suspension etc etc.

Brakes will stay the same but im going to re-haul everything, front calipers are going to be changed though. New lines and the MC will be brand new, servo will be repainted.

Think that is the end of my plans, dont know what ive missed though lol

Anyway, i dont expect me to do much untill after xmas, we will see.

09-20-2009, 10:29 PM
Sounds cool, do keep us updated with this :)

I keep thinking about getting a small car for a long-term project. I fancy something like an XR2 (had one years ago and loved it) and doing something trick to the engine..

AW09
09-20-2009, 10:48 PM
Buy some vauxhall, fit 2.0, strip the interior and have some fun!.

Could do it in a weekend lol

macca
09-21-2009, 06:04 PM
I've always been a Ford and Toyota man though you see. You can do similar stuff with big engines to the Fords, everything fitted everything else pretty much.

AW09
10-04-2009, 06:18 PM
Well finaly the car has had some work done!

Woke up this morning, and with my birthday money i decided to take a trip to halfords to buy some things i need.

Now the car is sat with no engine and a lot of other bits missing.

Paint will be bought asap, but tomorrow i plan to strip the seam sealer and paint around the seems in the engine bay and i may get all the undersealer off the drivers side arch too.

Heres the paint i plan:
http://i8.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/e3/00/6f38_1.JPG

Meanwhile the engine bay is being rustproofed and sprayed, the gearbox will be painted up in silver, the tiebars, drive shafts, hubs, struts, lower arms etc will all be painted black.

The steering rack will be painted silver too. New track rod ends, New balljoints, New wheel bearings all round too.

All that and i havnt even mentioed the engine yet lol.. Im going to be asking my mate about a complete astra, just waiting on some money lol.

Not too botherd about the engine yet though, want the car finished first.

Im not going to bother doing the rear end overhaul untill the front is finished.

Ang

Let's hope we get that Indian summer for the paint drying...... good luck!

Seeing as its been bumped il add the progress, altho still no pics.

Lower arm bushs are orderd, 1 lower arm is painted, Gearbox is painted, Drive shafts are painted. Everything is stripped from the front of the car, just waiting for some free time/good weather to get the seams stripped and sorted.

Cant wait to do it, but it having the good weather!

Good stuff mate, you still going with the 1.4 8v? A guy at college is after one of those engines if you hear of any? How long till you get it back on the road? stupid question I know but thought I would ask!

AW09
10-16-2009, 05:24 PM
Engine wise i havnt decided yet lol. Plans keep changing as my job/time does. Plus i dont want to do things by half so meh.

I would imagine it will be back on the road for spring. I do know of a 1.4 8v, but does he want mpi, spi or carb?

AW09
10-19-2009, 05:53 PM
More! lol

Not much to see, as i forgot to get pics yesterday but ya know! lol
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1984.jpg
Inner arch, you can mainly see the wing tho! lol. But all the inner wing/inside where the wing covers has been stripped back, rust proofed, undersealed and finaly i redone the seam sealer where the wing meets everything.

Arch etc, Not finished, just a before picture.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1985.jpg

Before: Removed the paint where i was in a rush to do it before and expanded the area.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1986.jpg

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1987.jpg
Painted up after rust proofing.

Finaly the blukhhead, just got 3 more areas to do, plus some other removal of paint.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1988.jpg

Should have all the removal stuff done by the end of the week, and should be primerd up with grey primer and seam sealerd. The miami blue paint should be done by monday.

Then its on with the suspension. One lower arm is painted up, 1 shock, 1 hub is also painted.

Ive changed my engine plans again, decided im going to refit the 16v untill i can gather up the bits for a 8v mpi engine.

Cant wait to have it done.

AW09
10-21-2009, 01:50 AM
1 step closer.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1991.jpg
Slam panel, flat back the primer, seam sealer then miami blue paint. Can start bolting things back on then!

macca
10-21-2009, 08:59 PM
Looking great, you're doing a brilliant job of it!

Why the 8v mpi instead of the 16v?

AW09
10-21-2009, 11:10 PM
Looking great, you're doing a brilliant job of it!

Why the 8v mpi instead of the 16v?

I try :)

And because the 16v has been uber unreliable, and i want a turbo :d
16v will be fitted for a couple of months tho, just untill i can gather the parts for the 8v conversion, and then in a year or so il add the turbo bobs.

macca
10-23-2009, 07:34 PM
Turbo the 8v or a C20DET?

AW09
10-23-2009, 10:58 PM
Cant get the DET's over here unfortantly. Will be left smallblock, so yes the SRI engine will be turboed. Mainly using 1.6 running gear though. Been done a fair few times before so im hoping it to be a reliable, easy and powerful conversion.

macca
10-25-2009, 06:06 PM
Showing up my lack of Vauxhall knowledge now, what's the engine in the Chavalibra turbos then?

AW09
10-25-2009, 09:25 PM
The 16v? Will be C20LET, 2.0 16v turbo.

DET's are 2.0 8v iirc.

macca
10-25-2009, 10:05 PM
That's the one! I was close :D

AW09
10-25-2009, 10:10 PM
You were indeed, I would go for a LET but the engine alone is about £1000, plus a £200 gearbox. Not forgetting the fuel costs and insurance!

macca
10-26-2009, 07:25 PM
Bugger! :(

Steve
10-27-2009, 12:22 PM
You were indeed, I would go for a LET but the engine alone is about £1000, plus a £200 gearbox. Not forgetting the fuel costs and insurance!
Plus the un-reliability, plus all the work needed to fit the gearbox and convert it to 2wd. Plus the fact that they're gay! If I had the money i'd look into converting mine over to turbo.

Small block would be ideal for yours mate, cheap and cheerful!

AW09
10-27-2009, 03:15 PM
Deffo, i know a F20 would be ok though. Not ever going to happen tho, dont want to stich my shell. Standard FTW!

Im hoping to do the turbo conversion on the cheap, most expensive parts will be the turbo and inlet manifold (I want a custom one that has the inlet on the passenger side). Doubt it will happen for a while as ive said though.

Even tho im dieing from a cold (lol) i decided to crack on with paint, its not perfect, but i didnt expect it to be. Its not finished, got to do around the turrets, due to running out of paint.

Looking good - it is so worth painting the engine bay as it looks bad when people open the bonnet and there is a completely different colour underneath!

macca
10-27-2009, 07:30 PM
Looking great made, well done!

As for making the Chavalibra gearbox run 2wd, I thought most of them did anyway due to shite diffs :tounge:

AW09
10-27-2009, 07:57 PM
lol Its deffo worth painting the engine bay, infact when i spray the car a different blue the interior (even bits that wont be seen) will be painted before the outside.

And thats indeed true macca, most of the 4X4 ones suffer from buggerd transfer boxes, or people remove the fuse to put them on dyno's.

Even in 4wd mode they barly put any power to rear.

macca
10-27-2009, 10:26 PM
What a load of rubbish.

I very nearly bought a Turbo Cali many years ago when I was young and naive. The overly masculine Italian Stalion complete with open shirt and gold medalions selling it and the slight overspray should have rung alarm bills.
But, it was the £4k worth of bills to repair the front and rear end crash damage really set the bells going.

The guy thought it was a good thing that so much money had been spent on it!!

AW09
10-27-2009, 11:27 PM
4k! can buy a house for that....

I wouldnt mind a cav, but il go for a up-to-date one and get a vectra GSI :d

In the mean time il stick to my small engined nova and my girly tigra. :p

AW09

I got it all back together yesterday, after putting the shafts back in i realised that none of it was turing, and the fact that the diff didnt seem to work?! I asked a few people and worked out the diff gears had moved/fallen out of the diff! Pulled off the plate to be joined by two gears, After mucking around with the diff to get the gears back in the car moved under its own power, altho i need to adjust the gear linkage and throttle cable. Few more bolts to be done up and i need to do the tracking but its getting better. Il let the pics do the talking.

In the next two pics ive made two changes, one in the first pic and the other in the 2nd pic, Anyone work out what they are? lol

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0050.jpg

Cant wait to have the front end finished/running/driving ok, then its time to turn it around, strip the rear end and get the rear beam acid dipped and powercoated. Fuel tank will be painted as well as everything else.

Nearly forgot i had my ebay bargin boot plyth thing turn up today, preety much no bare metal in my car now

Looking good, I like the subtle touches!

I think spraying the top half of the lights red will look spot on, take away the white-ness of it if you know what I mean! :)

The subtle touches really do it for me too lol.
The half red rears will prob be done last tbh, for now il stick both clears on and see what i like, would be nice to get the car out with them on and see them somwhere other than my mums drive lol

Anyway the bumper towing eye smoothing has been finished, and looks good, its not perfect but will be redone when i do the front bumper so no worry.

Excuse the poor pics, my cam has packed up so im left with my cam phone :(

After having a go at LED's for the number plate light i copied somone else and now running a 501 sidelight/repeater blub, works perfect. So time to smooth the bumper hole;
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/Image021.jpg

Bit of filler and it should be great.

Tomorrow il get pics of the grab handle, i smoothed the lock and the blub is in the place of it, just need to find a lense, scrap yard trip for that.

Cheers

Once again a update, at least this thread will be epic to show anyone my car lol

Havnt done a massive amount apart from change the odd light to a clear, no pics of that because its nothing ground breaking lol.
Ive decided to do somthing that has been bugging me since i put that engine in, ive always been wary of the messy wiring behind the dash. So today i decided to pull out the dash (most of the work was done already) and tidy it all up. Yes i have a bit of OCD lol

You see how messy my car is!!

Apparently i still own this car? lol
Not much has happend. Put the dash back in, tidy'ed it up a bit. Moved it.

Got brakes to go on it now, as well as some more shoes as the tyres need changing on the alloys. Decide im gonna push to get it done by march, but i need a corsa more than this so no big spending on this anytime soon.

List of jobs to do:
Fit and bleed brakes
Tracking
Change ICV
Exhaust manifold gasket change and EGR blank.
Two tyres for the new wheels
Air filter
Change rear lights back to standard
Adjust gear linkage
New battery
Wiper blades

OH and a MOT.

Might be finished by 2020 lol

Steve

Look i still haven't done Any work on it :) Idle problem is for sure the ICV, thought it might have been a sensor, but its not :(

Going to get this and the corsa up in the air so i can get some work done on both. First job on the nova is the tracking etc. Second is brakes. Also need to check where the tyres are rubbing :s

By some strange reason, i felt like a bit of nova bumming today lol

With help from a 12v (lol) She fired into life, after the 5th time trying. Wanted to have a sort out of the stuff inside. Mostly corsa stuff.

Moved it to the other side of the drive, and omg, i love it all over again lol

Removed the last off the stuff.

Updated the list

bleed all brakes etc - MAJOR issue here, Read below
1 cv Boot clip - Ebay, just need a couple of quidski.
ICV - Cant find one from a 16v!
Secondy air switch - Scrappy.
New Battery - Errrmmm il come back to this.
Heater cable clip - Tomorrow!
air filter - Box is fitted, just need to buy a paper filter.
Fit Speedo cable - Once the car is running, incase there is any dial issues.
Do tracking - Once the car has passed mot, For now, coming off the list.
Boot pop - Need one, £5, CBA.
Oil breather - Tomorrow!
Throttle cable clip - Scrap yard find :(
Map sensor pipe - Cant find

Updated the list.

Brake bleeding was attempted today, but the pedal just goes straight to the floor, No build up of pressure, fluid level change or anything! Think the MC is funked, Which is a pisser.

Not sure how/what im going to do yet!

You are as mad as us when it comes to rusty cars! Love it. Hardly see any of them around now. They are the sort of cars that you give loads of tlc to and then you crash it or someone else does :D Failing that someone hits you.

Good on you for all that work!

Sorted the battery tray rust, no pics as i forgot.

Another picture of the engine bay, Still need to do the airbox, thermostat and a bit more tidying, but imo, its the best bit about the car. Lots of people say it looks very factory, which i love, what do you think?
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/100_3984.jpg

Also trying to decide what to do wheel wise, thinking of returning it to 5spoke-ness
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/100_3993.jpg
Even standard height it looks good, Will have to see what occurs.

Other than that, the list is getting shorter, To buy (Before MOT):

Battery
Thermostat (Ordering one tomorrow!)
Secondary Air Injection valve (Fecking gay thing)

Once its failed, i mean, passed the mot:
Lowering springs
Side skirts
Dip stick (uhhh)
Uncut GSi door cards, if i can find any.

As for jobs to do on it:
CV boot clip fitting
Bleed brakes, and secure a couple of the lines
Change wiper motor
Fit heater control cables and rods
Roughly set the tracking
Exhaust needs a slight tweak

And then check everything before MOT, every nut and bolt, every wire, pipe and bulb.

Not much to do huh.... meh

Does look very good, and yes if you didn't know better you'd never know that engine wasn't factory fitted which is a credit to you :)

Does need to sit a bit lower, I know the camera makes it look worse but the gap on the front arches is too big! lol.

Yeah, he currently has a C20LET Nova track car, but the shell is tired and has cracked in a few places so he wants to start fresh. This shell is being blasted, strengthened, welded, caged up, resprayed after doing all his mods like custom front cross member and stuff.
