Here is an intro for the T-5R. It was produced in 1994 so that Volvo could race in touring car championships - a bit like homogulation in the rallying where you have to produce a certain number of road going versions of a car to be able to race it.
TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) ran the btcc programme, he also ran the silk cut Jaguar Le Mans cars and the Benetton & Arrows F1 team.
Here are a few pictures of the car in BTCC livery :

The T-5R was sold by Volvo in 1995 and a limited run of 2,500 cars were produced with consecutive chassis numbers - Volvo made all 2,500 in a row. There are 3 colours : cream yellow, black and olive green - only 200 T-5R's were earmarked for the UK but there are a few extra that were imported.
Here is a pic of a T-5R at the launch :

On the next post I am going to copy and paste my project from the Volvo Forum.

Hi all,
I thought I would start another project thread for my new car which I bought in December 2007. Hopefully I wont be spending as much as I spent on the T4 this time (well I don't mind so much if I keep this one a bit longer, instead of selling it after completion!)
I have wanted a manual 850 T-5R saloon since I was at school, and they seem to be quite hard to find! As soon as I found one by chance on Auto trader I went straight up the next day to see it.
Im 22 now so I can just about afford the Insurance! The only modifications on the car when I bought it were a Re-map and a BSR stainless steel exhaust.
Here are some pictures I took at the end of January:

The first things I bought / had done for the car were:
1. One of those silver "850" sill covers as one was missing.
2. A boot seal (split).
3. Set of Genuine Volvo "850" mats - sent from America to my local dealership as they were made in America.
4. One of those grey roof strips as one of them had de-laminated plastic.
5. Genuine Volvo battery.
6. 302 mm discs.
7. New pads.
8. Carriers to take the 302 mm discs.
9. A new genuine (not a recon) caliper from Sweden.
10. A set of genuine "Titan" valves from Volvo - only compatible with the Titan wheels.
11. Set of Goodridge braided brake hoses.
12. 2 Volvo centre caps (with classic logo).
13. New style washer jets.
14. 5 wheels re-furbished at spit and polish.
16. Clear side repeaters.
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/DSCN3265.jpg
Here is a pic of my new 302 mm brakes and new caliper.

Next I decided to get the car fully serviced. The car has had two previous owners. The car has been serviced at Kings Volvo in Southampton by the first owner (the garage it was first registered) and then exclusively at BPC Volvo service specialists by the second owner - where it had a brand new engine fitted in 2004.
Here is a list of the work carried out.
1. Complete breather system.
2. Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil & genuine oil filter.
3. Genuine plugs.
4. Genuine Volvo Strut brace.
5. BSR optiflow air filter (induction Kit).
6. n/s fog light & fitting.
7. powerflex poly top mount.
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/DSC00090.jpg
The strut brace is one of the best value for money modifications, really stiffens up the car at the front and stops the car rolling as much when cornering.
Im also pleased with the induction kit which is hardly any louder than standard - except for a nice air sucking noise and a "dump" when changing gear!
Not so sure about the poly top mount though, it is nice to have unless cruising when it makes a bit of a drone!
Cheers,
Kerry

In May, some of my friends and I headed down to the nurburgring for a holiday. We had a fantastic week and I did several laps with my T-5R. I didn't really time myself, but on my quickest lap I managed just under 10 minutes (9 min 50ish) which I was quite pleased with - not bad for (as then) standard suspension.
I met someone down there from Belgium who also had an Olive T-5R - he took me for a lap of the ring which was under 9 minutes!!! We overtook several Porches, Impreza's etc.
My car was fantastic and covered a total of 957 miles and averaging 27 mpg - including the nurburgring laps which brought the average down to 17ish before heading home! The only thing I noticed is that smoke pourred from my pads after I did 4 laps in a row! There was however minimal fading, probably because they were genuine Volvo discs and pads. Goodyear Eagle F1's dont half squeal on most bends!! Grip fairly well though...
Here are a couple of pics:

After getting back from the Nurburgring, I had a couple of modifications ready for my car.
Firstly I bought a set of blue samco's from Don at Kalmar Union. I replaced the coolant and turbo hoses. I also bought a forge dump valve and blanking plate from him, sounds great.
Secondly, I bought a set of GAZ coilovers. Absoluteley fantastic. Outstanding quality, and the car handles like its on rails.
They are fully adjustable and the car can retain its original ride height if desired. Worth the extra money over some of the other brands in my opinion and as a bonus, they are made in England. They are LEDA coilovers, which GAZ bought the design for when LEDA went out of business a few years ago.
Here are some pictures: I will take some more of the car on a sunny day to show how low I have gone.

The car has been in for a major service, the work carried out included:
- New lower control arms.
- New front wheel bearings.
- New track rod ends.
- New fuel filter.
- New crank shaft positioning sensor oil seal.
- Tracking and lazer alignment.
- Uprated IPD drop links.
- Oil and filter change (Mobil 1 0w - 40 fully synthetic).
- 2 x Yokohama Parada Spec 2 tyres - I now have a set of 4 on the car.
I also found some S70 door handles on ebay and had them painted in my cars colour!
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/DSCN3713.jpg
This shows the difference between a genuine Volvo drop link and the uprated IPD version.
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/DSCN3613.jpg
Yokohama Parada Spec 2 road legal!

S70 door handles now colour coded.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/DSCN3748.jpg
Fitted to the car.
The car is now superb to drive. Since owning the car I have replaced almost every suspension and braking component as well as a whole list of other things...
In my opinion the parada spec 2 tyres are leagues better than any other tyre I have used in the dry. In comparison to the last set of tyres I had (Goodyear Eagle F1's) they grip much better than the F1's in the dry, but the F1's are better in the wet.
The S70 door handles were no bother to fit, and in my opinion look much better!

Kerry

Since owning the car I have replaced the brakes : 302mm discs, police pads and braided hoses.
Suspension: Gaz coilover kit.
Every bush on the front of the car for steering including new control arms, track rods, track rod ends, drop links, top suspension mounts and front wheel bearings!
The car now is perfect at the front! The brakes, suspension & bushes make the car as nice to drive as a new car! Now its time to do the back:
2 x rear inner bushes.
2 x rear outer bushes.
2 x damper bushes (in boot - not in picture).
and separateley:
The last 2 poly bushes for the engine (powerflex).
The inner c.v. boot for the passenger side (I did the outer one in Nov).
And 1 x steering rack gaitor.
My package from parts for Volvo's arrived yesterday:
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/3bbaeae3.jpg
Looking forward to having the back of the car perfect aswell! The only bushes left to replace will be the anti-roll bar at the front and rear, but I havent decided if I am buying the IPD kit yet.

I picked my car up from Caffyns Volvo on Friday after having the rear trailing arm inner and outer bushes replaced, they also noticed that the near side control arm bearing had broken - that would explain the slight rub on full lock. I had only just replaced the control arm in August but it was a pattern part. I had it replaced with a genuine Volvo item. I also had the fuel breather hose replaced on the top of the fuel tank to the engine, 2 steering rack gaitors as mine were a bit perrished, inner cv boot as mine was perrished and slightly torn and I had the tracking and 4 wheel alignment done.
Here is a pic of the rear outer trailing arm bushes - Volvo said they are doing 2 a week at my local main dealer on 850's & S/V/C70's and mine were amoung the worst they have seen! Most independant garages dont want to touch the trailing arm bushes as there are 2 extraction tools (one for each bush) and they are very difficult to replace without the extraction tools. Anyway every bush etc has now been replaced on my car so it should be good for a few thousand more miles! Volvo did a free health check while it was there and said the car is in excellent shape - although I could have bought a new Volvo for the amount I have spent on this one (not that I would though!).
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/1ccde17e.jpg
As you can see the trailing arm outer bushes are completely "shot" and the centre moves freely in one and has completely come out of the other. The new scan-tech bushes I bought from parts for volvos are completeley solid!
The car is now absolutely silent and totally different to drive. Where the bushes were so worn before, there was no "feel" from the back of the car, now there is and it is a real pleasure to drive!
Here is a pic of my filthy car in the snow yesterday night!

Brilliant set of posts Kerry, thanks
The car is a real credit to you, looks great and goes the same!
Just to add really that I've been a passenger in it at some quite high speeds around a private roundabout and was immensely impressed. It's re-aligned my beliefs of what a front wheel drive car can do, especially such a big one.
That was before the suspension got finished too!

Cheers Mark - I will have to take you out some time after my wheel refurb when I haven't got the ridiculous sized space saver on it!! - it handles even better with that rear suspension done.

Most people think that but at the end of the day any car you buy its pot luck if you have lots of work to do or not, hard to be sure of its previous life. Looks like the care you've given to it will minimise other costs in the long run. What make of patent part was the control arm? Be handy to know, to avoid. I would have thought you would have grounds to go back if you could be bothered to have a whinge about it.
Enjoy that smooth driving :)

Thanks, it is almost perfect to drive now - still loads of modifications possible though!
The garage that did the work bought the part from eurocarparts, I will certainly not bother using them again. As ECP dont make parts themselves I guess it depends on who they get to manufacture parts for each make of car!

Finished a couple more mods to my car this week. I had all 4 wheels re-furbed in TVR anthracite, I had the side strips on the doors and front wing colour coded to match the car, and I had the grey on the front and rear bumpers restored so that I dont have to smear bumper care on each weekend!
Here is a pic before with the side strips un colour coded and my old wheel colour :

Side bits look really good, I think you should get the bumpers done too now! Would really modernise it. Do like the new wheel colour now too, though the photos don't do it justice as they look a lot darker and nicer in the flesh!
I also think you should wind the front up just a tad, as it looks like the car is pointing to the ground a bit too much at the front.. ;)

Cheers mate, I think I am going to leave it now appearance wise for a while unless I find a cheap 850R spoiler in the near future! I may well raise it up 10 - 15 mm or so, as apart from being a tad nose down it scraped a tiny bit in a car park today (not so you would notice but underneath the valance).
Yeah the wheels do look a lot darker - I think there was a lot of sun on them earlier on!

I took my car to RT Mechanics to have my tie bar poly bushes and the fire wall poly bush done on Friday. I also noticed a car from on here, wont mention any names though, but you know who you are! The bushes are excellent and the engine hardly rocks at all - the sound in the cabin is also improved a lot. Russ certainly knows his stuff about 850's, really pleased with the service & very impressed with the knowledge. I received some useful advice & Russ also picked on a couple of small things wrong with my car that my main dealer didn't spot a few months ago, which I will be getting done in the near future. I will definately be going back! Shame I didn't get to see "the peril" - hopefully next time!

Cheers Andy. I (Me, Barry and Mark went up) saw you and your brothers cars on Friday, they look fantastic - but you are still yet to see mine (I like your brothers new wheel colour btw!). I have to say your car is brilliant and the interiour is really nice, that new back rest cover was well worth whatever you paid for it!
I was impressed with the whole place - miles better than my main dealers and a specialist I have been to. It is good to be able to speak to Russ, where a lot of places the owners aren't really too bothered! His Volvo (but especially 850) enthuisiasm / knowledge is also great.

Hi all, thought I would put a picture up of my newest mod. I bought a complete interior from an 850R owned by a member on another forum. I am really pleased with it as it is almost mint. The base and upright bolsters hold you in much better than the original 850 T-5R seats - almost did my back in changing the seats over though!!

Fitted:

No bother at all to fit! I will have to test drive it to see if it makes any noticeable difference!

Cheers guys, I am very pleased with it to say the least! And Macca you are right, definately the right way round for the alacantara this time. Also you wouldn't believe how hard it was to lift the old seats into the loft at 30kg each!! Its a good job the new ones look better....

The loft? You're fecking mental! lol.. Mine are still in the shed and I couldn't even carry them that far. Need to get them out soon
That strut brace is a proper strut brace, see no bendy bits at the ends!! ;)

Yeah, I think when I leave home the seats might be staying! I haven't really thought about getting them back down again. I am pretty lucky the ceiling hasn't bowed they weigh so much! lol
The brace is really high quality and wont budge for much! As for how much it actually does, I will have to wait and see if it makes any difference!

Probably not very much!! Hopefully it will stiffen the back up a bit. But it wasnt too expensive if it makes no difference at all..
I think it looks quite good, if it does nothing else. The next mod I am going to post, when it arrives, will be the most pointless and it cost almost as much as the brace!

That's one of the reasons my towbar is staying exactly where it is, the box iron frame under the car is about the best rear-bracing you can get. I'm not sure how common it is amongst other cars, but the rear suspension on the Volvo's is in 2 parts. Unlike the front, where the strut is inside the coil, on the back they are completely seperate units (you can actually change the rear suspension on these cars without removing the wheels). The spring goes in the "normal" location, but the shocks are actually mounted further forward, just behind the back seat. As such, bracing between the two suspension turrets in the back doesn't do much, but it does look kind of cool ;)
Come on, whats the next "toy"? As I type I'm buying a set of green injectors for mine and looking at the IPD anti-sway bars.

My Mondeo is pretty much like that on the rear suspension, not uncommon.
The Supra is designed pretty well at the rear end, the shocks and springs are in a conventional layout but the bracing across the rear struts from the factory is so big it completely negates the need for a strut brace. However, they are still produced and people still swear that they can feel the difference. Placebo effect I'm sure :)

Small update, on 5th May I got these 96 seat belts to match the new ones in the front. Volvo changed them in 96 so my 95 ones didnt match!

I also got this 850R handbrake cover for less than £40 from my main dealers :

Me and my mates have been for another European road trip. 4 countries in 1 day, and of course another visit to the nurburgring:
T4Mark hadn't finished his T4 build in time so he bought a 940 turbo from Ebay.
Here's a couple of pics:

Marks 940 Turbo on the ring. He did a couple of mods to it : 740 turbo alloys with 205/50/15 Hankooks, lowered 40 mm, MBC and he managed a sub 10 minute lap (not timed, but to the nearest minute). Not bad for a 91 brick :)
Next was time for my service at RT Mechanics:
Oil and filter change
Poly wishbone bushes
New oil cooler pipes as mine were leaking :(
New control arm
Expansion tank as mine was cracked
Temp sensor
Thermostat
Coolant change
Heat wrapped exhaust.
I use RT Mechanics as im sure Russ knows more about Volvo's than anyone else I have used to work on my car. The service and workmanship is second to none and you always know what is going on with your car. I wouldnt like to let anyone else work on my car since I have started using RT.
Very pleased with the heat wrapped exhaust - I wish I had measured engine bay temps before and after as im sure it makes a difference!

My recent breakdown: I had my car booked in for its MOT, and I hadn't really planned to have much done. My car had been making a few clicking and scraping noises from the front left which was a bit odd but didn't sound or seem to be too serious, so I thought I would leave it until it was up at RT Mechanics to be checked out.
My girlfriend and I set off on a Friday at the beginning of August to go on holiday so we drove to brooklands where we were camping for the weekend. On the way there the noise got louder and louder but we had to get there before 7.30 pm. By the time we arrived, the n/s front brake was binding. I decided not to drive it to RT Mechanics on the Saturday as the problem was getting too serious.
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/aa899480.jpg
Here's my car on the breakdown truck!
When we arrived at RT Mechanics it was about 3pm and I was lucky enough to be taken out in the Peril (Russ's project car). It was absolutely fantastic! Gives me something to aim for with mine in the future.. :) Thanks again Russ.
Heres a few pics of the problem with mine:
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/100_4499.jpg
The disc and carrier have changed colour as they got so hot from the binding caliper!
It turns out that the noises were from my c.v. joint which was beginning to fail.
I had a new c.v. joint fitted, new discs, wheel arch liner, a carrier and also an abs sensor and at the same time I had a few mods carried out!

IPD uprated anti roll bars on Russ's recommendation.
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/100_4662.jpg
Brass gear linkage bushes on Russ's recommendation.
I have to say that my car has now been transformed. The car feels like it stops twice as quick with those pads! The work well from cold and are fantastic from hot.
The gear change is now silk smooth - can't believe the difference something so simple makes.
And to leave the best until last.... the IPD arb's are simply amazing! The difference they make even with coilovers already fitted is unbelievable. The stability, grip and feel are now superb.
Thanks Russ and RT Mechanics, my car is perfect again for now at least!

The Quaife diff is fantastic. I thought the IPD bars were my best mod until I got this. Grip is incredible and it is almost a joke how early you can put the power on coming out of bends and roundabouts! :)
I will post up how im getting on after a few miles.

No updates as such, but did a 140 mile round trip on Monday to the Quaife MSA British Rallycross championship at Lydden Hill and back and the car was absolutely fantastic. The diff really is amazing and the grip is incredible. One of the best things I found with it is that you can enter some corners in a higher gear than usual because you can power round and out of bends at a much higher speed. What was quick cornering before, is now no effort cornering with the Quaife installed!
There were 6 Volvo's competing (4 240's, 1 ph 1 S40 and one ph2 S40 with a 3.0 red block) on Monday, and every race that had a Volvo entry was won by a Volvo. Unfortunately there were no Volvo's in the top class but the racing was excellent as usual.
Here is a pic of my car taken by a photographer who was at the rallycross :

Thought I would post some pics of my nurburgring trip from 7th - 15th July 2010. Managed to do a few laps and the diff is brilliant, makes so much difference to the car on the track. Up the hill towards the carousel my o/s front wheel would spin for example, with the diff there is no chance of that. Very pleased with the car although I think I need to get a JT racing exhaust as the soundtrack was lacking!

An update at last! I took the car up to wheels in motion in Chesham, Buckinghamshire as I have heard so many good reviews from so many people. They set up all sorts of performance cars including time attack and drift cars.
First of all the car was put on the ramp and the current alignment, camber, caster etc of the car are displayed :
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/6cd55631.jpg
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/00c8ddfc.jpg

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/t4kerry/a825e2bd.jpg
After analysing the data, they discussed with me the modifications that I had already done and how I plan to use the car : fast road / track use, and then adjustments are made.
The main adjustment was to reduce the camber from 2.5 ish degrees to 1.2 ish degrees which will improve the cars ability to put the power down and it raised the front up by 5mm. The distance between the centre of the wheel and the arch are now 300mm front and rear which I was recommended as a good base set up. After the adjustments are made, the new results are displayed :

Very impressed with the service, knowledge, equipment and value for money - I noticed the difference on the 100 odd mile return trip. Would recommend wheels in motion to anyone, very pleased.

I first heard about them from you, and the I have seen their name come up time and time again with good feedback to go with it. What went wrong? I thought you already updated it?

So-called Supra 'specialist' who fitted it didn't fit it and adjust it properly, so for the last three years it's been wearing when it shouldn't because it was under a ridiculous amount of tension.
It started slipping so I mentioned it to my mechanic as it was a bit random, he checked and realised what was wrong and has de-adjusted it now but it's too late as the damage is done.
It drives much nicer now, much easier and the clutch action is a lot lighter. But.. It now slips easily when it's under load on the 2nd turbo.
OS Giken want £800 just for the rebuild kit! My mechanic reckons he can get it replated for a fraction of that, but I'm waiting for him to check to make sure.

Tossers! What a shame. Hope it can be replated ok, performance clutches must be very expensive for the supra tt's then?

The average Helix paddle type clutch will be around £350-400. The problem I have is that I no longer have the standard flywheel so would need to get a new one and that's another £380 (and that's with a 10% discount).

Long time no update - again!
For the last few weeks I have changed several service items :
Genuine Volvo :
Plugs
Fuel filter
Bougicord leads (these sorted out a strange misfire that I had at high RPM)
Distributor cap
Rotar arm
Car drives perfectly now, can feel a few more bhp under my right foot!
Also thought I would add a few snow pics :

Picked up my car on 27/12/2010 from RT's with the JT exhaust fitted - it is absolutely awesome and makes the car feel much more torquey, also cant get enough of that sound with the 3" DP. My old exhaust used to pop and bank quietly, but this does a few nice pops and bangs when you lift off the loud pedal :). Couldn't be more pleased, will certainly do me until I decide to go for more power....

Cheers, I didnt like it at first but I prefer it now. Think I may get the wheels painted the same anthracite colour of the centre caps so that they match..
Nice bit of carbon for the sunroof ;)

I havent done much to the car for a while, until this weekend..
In April I went over to Belgium as one of my friends (JC Viggen from youtube) decided to break his car. I bought his intercooler, reverse flow IC piping, modified radiator mounts etc and 850R boot spoiler..

Had a busy weekend this weekend..
On Saturday I set off early for Santa Pod to take part in the Run What Yer Brung. The journey took 3 hours in total and entry was £10 and a further £25 for unlimited runs. My brother and I went up in my T-5R and we met my mum and dad there who went up in their C70
I watched for a while and then my Dad and I decided to have a go. My first run was a 14.7 second 1/4 mile which I was pretty pleased with. I did a further 7 runs - I some how managed to win 7 out of my 8 runs. The cars I beat included an STI classic Impreza, a Mazda MPS, Mondeo ST220, Alfa V6, my dads C70 x 2.
My best run of the day was :
Reaction time : 0.501 seconds
Total time : 14.573
Terminal speed : 100.52 mph
I was absolutely made up with those times, especially considering I didnt do a particularly agressive start! Here are some pics :

Yeah it was very impressive at sumo power, there is nothing they cant do there!
It weighs just over 1300 kg's so not too heavy really, although obviously not light!
Cheers, it will stay like this until I get some AP big brakes and then the ultimate goal is 400 bhp which is obviously a lot less than most people who tune these but I want to keep it reliable!
Even 400 bhp will be a lot for road use, 350bhp Nova Turbo is the closest I've experienced, Although a slightly different league lol
1300kg is a lot in my world of 800/900kg cars lol

As above, its much the same with the starlets now, alot of the parts that toyota used to stock are being phased out, understandably I guess as mines 15 years old. I've had a few blue print parts which I was sceptical about but they seem to last well and was quite suprised by the quality when I got them.
Car looks good mate, 1/4 and dyno run are great results! Any idea what boost you're running? Is the engine capable of the 400hp figure on stock internals or would you have to start looking at going forged? Definite sleeper this car :D
