Always wanted a v8 opel manta, oh that sound sends a chill down through my spine. Saw a project one, poorly running. Well this is it without the supercharger on and before the previous owner mucked up the running. I didn't put this up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAb9b4rvOX8

James got it running nicely, lots of work done and supercharger had to be removed as the needle bearings where shot.

I only got to drive her for 5 hours, before crashing her (my first crash that was self inflicted I have to add). CAT B unfortunately.

Anyway, project number 2 was a car that I remembered driving past sitting in the driveway of a house in Burgess Hill. I rang them up about 2 hours after crashing the manta to find a new shell. If you know the mantas you know they are rare and most often rusty.

Anyway picked up the 1987 exclusive coupe (the most sort after shape and model) shell which has holes in the floor and lots of work needed but my saving grace was that the engine was undamaged, thank god. The supercharger was off so undamaged. Well it's a major project and probably will be a track day and limited driving car with abs this time round.

The engine is a 3.5L rover V8 engine, alloy, the supercharger is a eaton M62 and have the original turbo about as this may get done. I can see this taking a long time but I am sure it will get done eventually.

Not sure if this is due to the arrival of the car that I crashed into with NO 1 manta V8 but some kind person has spent a lot of time welding up the manta and will update soon the progress with some photos ;)

I was wondering why James had come back filty and knackered over the last few days. I can't wait............... :D

The black v8 VGC was the original. The blue exclusive came as a stripped out bare shell with the 2.0 gte engine and gearbox flung in. The photos show its original state. Lots of work but well worth it I think

This is the v8 engine being cut out of the manta. Supercharger is off with new needle bearings floating around in the kitchen somewhere ;) We were lucky as it still turned over and ran, we stopped it pretty quickly due to the damaged oil filter. This is a rover 3.5L v8, alloy so much lighter than the original. Better brakes going on this one. :innocent:. We stripped absolutely everything off this car and sent pretty much just the floor pan to the breakers to get the certificate of destruction for cat B. It was one rapid beast, shockingly so. You could not sit in it without a grin. We had a coach load of tourists around her at the petrol station. Looking forward to taking her out to a few meets.

I could just imagine the camaro and this out together.

I thought I would post up some more photos showing just how bad this car is for rust. Many mantas look great on the outside but are awful underneath. Many people including the manta people who owned this car said to break it as spares. These cars are pretty rare now and very sought after (a) it's a coupe (b) it's a manta :D (c) gt/e exclusive (d) monaco blue all reasons to save it.

Over the time of this thread I will add photos showing the progress and hopefully people will appreciate the time and effort. We toyed with wide arches and respray but it looks like it will remain pretty standard with quad headlights. It has the blue tinted windows. Not sure if to keep these or to have the black tints yet.

Some close ups, good and bad to show the start pointhttp://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn314/angdown11/100_9433-1.jpg and yes you may want to wait a short while for the photos to load :p

Here we go, can't believe how quick this is progressing. We will need an engineers report at the end of this and its good to start from scratch. Lots and lots of welding, undersealed after and other areas with hammerite. Engine is in but core plug has decided to leak so that needs doing. Honda prelude radiator can cope easily with 200bhp and will be fitted properly, not done yet. Brakes need to be uprated. Quad headlights being sorted. ;)

http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn314/angdown11/40600001-1.jpg

Count the welding areas.

Wow, looking really good Ang!! Seeing all these people doing all this work on restoring their bodywork is really making me itch for getting out there and ripping everything off my lude and repairing the body totally and competely :D Just gotta wait till summer as I have no garage :( lol

Can't wait to see this when it's done! This and the Camaro side by side will be a stunning sight. European muscle vs American muscle!! :D

Thanks for that I can't take any credit for the hard work though, I wish, but I am the one who does keeps finding these projects and a part hunter;).

I am glad that he's starting from scratch as when he is fitting parts he is checking every part and found quite a few problems with the way everything had been set up in the original manta. Unless things are stripped down there is now way you could spot these, but the bloke building the original manta should have been aware:rolleyes:.

He's been fitting the engine and box in a far better set up in this car and had to carry out a few modifications to house the box and shift properly. It is amazing how people have done half cut jobs. Even though the other manta had an mot and had a lot of work done by us to repair problems from the previous owner you can't actually see better ways of doing it until you have all the parts and have a stripped out shell. At a meet when the car is out he can explain everything, I have a basic idea of what has been done.

We are not the sort of people who fit lots of mods but we do lots of restoration and things people generally don't do. Probably because we don't have lots of money to splash about as we keep on collecting old bangers ;)

I have to say James very rarely has to buy replacement arches as he cuts out metal and welds in new. When that arch is sprayed I doubt you will know its even been done.

In the Summer holidays when there is more time we may hold a few sessions at the workshop for repairs, welding or touch up. Its quite nice in the Summer and quite a bit of room when we haven't got lots of cars down there of our own and mates . As we are clearing out a few odds and sods for the Easter hols should have more space,

Hahaa, well, I'd say that the job of part hunter is just as important, if not more important, than the job of repairing everything and putting it all together. If no parts, how can you rebuild it :p lol

Does sound a little worrying about all the problems you've stumbled across, but good you've found them so you can sort them out. I'm just worried as to just how much rust is hidden under the body kit on my lude. I know there's a bit there, but still worrying :(

Would be brilliant to get to talk to him and see how he's done it all. That is always the advantage of working from the chassis up, being able to mount everything and bolt it all together in the best possible fashion. Never had the opportunity to do so myself, but always impressed with those who do :)

Hey, nothing wrong with old bangers :D in fact, some of the nicest cars I've driven and worked on were old bangers. 1972 Camaro, 1969 Charger, 1970 Demon and my all time favourite, 1964 Impala  Just wish I had the money to buy and run one, but I will do so when I am in Canada again :)

Oooooh, arch work is cool, cos they can be a real pain to sort out. I just usually use the evil of filler

That sounds cool about in the summer, could be a good little thing getting that going :) I'll probably be working on my car out on the road in the summer, provided the back is up to scratch for working on the lower parts of the car :)

Ang
03-14-2009, 08:42 PM
You shouldn't worry about hondas they are excellent and don't rust.

We do have the butterfly stands as you can see in one of the photos so the cars can be lifted safely up in the air to look underneath. It's worth a check with any car to spot rust, remove and treat and weld if necessary and then underseal. Saying that mine is a 1991 import and not rusty at all, no advisories and no welding ever and that was stripped back. Yes I had a couple of bubbles of rust appearing on the the arches but that's it. I am sure yours will be the same.

We all have to use filler in the end to smooth out the lines and make ready for primer. With wheel arches that are so rusty you have no choice but to cut out and weld in new metal. One of the other arches will be rubbed down, treated, filled and sprayed.

I offered to learn welding over the easter to start the car myself but for some reason or other he kept it a secret it and started it ;) He knows I'm clumsy. LOL.

Crazy_C
03-14-2009, 11:23 PM
Hahaa, that's cool. The main problem is under my side skirts, as there is rust showing through where the side skirts are moulded in near the front wheel arch and from what Mark n I could see, it's not all that pretty under my side skirts but I gotta rip them off!!

Sound like you're lucky with no rust on your 91 lude :)

Hahaaa, awwww, well least someone's doing the work, and it means you get to take it easy :) hehee can't complain aboot that now can ye? lol

Ang
03-15-2009, 12:13 PM
I wonder if when the side skirts were fitted they damaged the metalwork, exposed it and so its started to rust. Mine has been driven loads and on the whole with the amount of ludes we've had never had to weld them. Do what you can to get them off carefully as some will have them if you don't want to put them back on, you'd be surprised what people want.

If you have surface rust you will need to remove the skirts get rid of the rust to clean metal and treat.

James actually got the manta started today. It's doing the cutting out after 5 secs which it did when we initally got the car but I am sure it will be resolved. I am so excited :yahoo:

Getting on well with that Ang, well done to you and especially James :)

Look forward to seeing it when it's done, it's great seeing the transformation already. Is it going white when it's finished?

Ang
03-19-2009, 07:29 PM
Yes thanks to James, not me, though its a good job I keep good photographic records of rebuild and dismantles as it is really needed when you rebuild. I think its now staying as a sleeper ;). That's all I can take credit for.

She has white hammerite on and has had the sunroof rubbed down where there was rust. We decided that it would be cool to keep the monaco blue as its a sought after colour.

I am not sure I will be driving it straight off as I feel so knackered all the time at the mo and very sore when I drive. I'm also so scared of not being able to brake and don't want to destroy her. I think I am going to have to go out with James and find a car park and get myself used to her, throw her around, braking harshly etc. I can't wait to drive her but at the same time nervous.

Trying our hardest to have her ready for the meet. Fingers crossed she will be there.

We can't wait to meet everyone, everyone seems so nice and friendly.:D

03-19-2009, 08:42 PM
Sounds great Ang. Don't be scared of her, she's a different car and you know James will have gone over this one with a fine tooth combe to make sure she's perfect. The other one was just bad luck, don't let it ruin your love.

Not good you're getting sore but then I suppose you weren't driving for quite a while so it's going to take time to get back to normal. Just hang in there with it and don't push too hard too soon! :)

Ang
03-19-2009, 09:11 PM
Cheers Macca, you know what its like, eager to get driving and not sure I should be at work at the moment. Having to dose up on the painkillers just to drive home.

You know how much I loved the v8 manta and my cars in general. I can't stand to see any old car being scrapped. Sentimental idiot I am

macca
03-19-2009, 09:29 PM
Awww lol :) It's no bad thing, shows you have a love for them!

I'm eager to drive too now, especially with the cast off but I don't feel totally confident to put enough weight on it should I need to brake hard so am waiting for a couple of days. Hopefully it will loosten up quickly.

Ang
03-19-2009, 09:34 PM
That's the hard part, if you can bang you foot hard against the floor then you are probably ready. If it hurts a lot then don't drive. LOL

I found as well that the moon boot through at my perception of what was normal. I found it hard to find the clutch believe it or not. The consultant said that as I had been walking on the moon boot which is higher on the right foot it made me feel that I had longer to travel with my left foot. Not sure that made sense

macca
03-19-2009, 09:55 PM
I wore the moon boot home and took it off and it sats in the corner of my room since :innocent: Natasha told me off for it

I can walk around and get up and down stairs ok, just with a bit of a limp/hobble. It's stiff more than anything, where I broke it doesn't hurt at all luckily and they said it was fully healed.

Scared to bang it on the floor in case it hurts!! Lol..

Ang
03-21-2009, 04:27 PM
Yeah I know that feeling with the moon boot. I would say you probably are safe enough if its been over 6 weeks? Can't remember how long its been. Be careful if its under that time. The boot is good for getting down swelling but horrible to walk in.

Oh and back to the manta some start up footage, best heard with headphones to get some idea of the amazing sound. Yes she is louder in real life. With the camaro staying if it is a meet just in Tunbridge wells will try and bring both v8s out if finished. Won't take both to Dover, would be broke. ;)

Try and ignore some of the higher pitched noises, its a minor issue that needs dealing with.

On the manta front just now trying to get the lower plastic bearing steering spindle but that is proving difficult. Now found a part number so will try a vauxhall dealer. There were no bearings in it at all :(. This is what happens when some people cut corners. I think I prefer having James do all the work as I know it will be done properly.

I know everything is progressing well now but it makes me shudder when I think about what corners and stupidity have been cut by the previous owner of the black manta. He must have known as he fitted the parts.

03-24-2009, 09:53 PM
Some people shouldn't be allowed near a spanner :( Glad this one will be sorted and you know James will have done it all properly.

Or at least the person who didn't will be close at home for you to shout at! :D lol..

Thanks to some great people round the corner now got the bearing we wanted, and a couple of extra parts. Been advised that volvo 240 brakes are a possible match though checking out a senator at the moment.

May end up with the other manta gte that we saw today, if we can get sorted. It's one step closer.

I will spend hours, and I mean hours, finding impossible parts to get my manta done. The supercharger I gather is being currently sorted :eyes:

Looks like we're heading over to Kent then for the senator next weekend. That will make another car to scrap and more spares

Ang
04-04-2009, 03:36 PM
Still waiting for phone contact for the senator, typical, although it has 100% feeback he has been poor to contact me, can but try. Tried to email and got a response but no proper answer to when we can pick up. Mobile phone rang and he is a trader but not declared it. Never mind.

The bodywork repairs to the wings and rubbing down is taking place in prep to spray to match. It looks like we'll be using the better doors from the black manta and they will need rubbing down and spraying. Good job we kept all the tinted windows.

Getting there. :)

Ang

Wings resprayed now, the battle is on to get it ready for bhp :D:D and an unexpected bonus that I found out about accident is having dixie horns!! Can't wait, if the noise of a 3.5Lv8 isn't loud enough the dixie horns should do the job. Just the car for them and no not going down the furry dice route! Zoe says she will disown us if we take her to school in it and do the horns. LOL. Wouldn't dream of doing that.

Looks like she will be road worthy and legal soon. Plans then for wide arch kit (and if I have my way a vented bonnet) and respray later on in the year.

Ang
04-10-2009, 09:43 AM
Looks like we may be going for mot this Saturday, though the bodywork will remain monaco blue and a little tatty until the weather warms up. Found the wide arched kit I want now and need to think about colour and getting the quad headlights repaired. ;)

Definitly worth hearing, gorgeous. :inlove:

Ang

Still not made it out of the yard as completely surrounded today, chocker!! Looks like next week. Here is a poor quality sounding video of her running, definitly not able to cope with that deep throaty sound so doubt you will get the true picture, that is apart from the little one today. ;) Some bodywork is slightly different shades but as I said she will be having the wide arches all round and vented bodykit and complete respray in the warmer weather, she needs to be driven to get out the way now and then (any excuse). LOL

Thanks for that:D. It's now had its first drive and just waiting for us to get that mot. Sorted out the 3rd party insurance until we get that engineers report. Anyone know a cheap engineer that can do a report for the manta  I have some ideas, don't care how good they are as long as its done. Tick boxes :rolleyes::rolleyes:. They need to see its roadworthy, not that the dvla are happy and the vosa via full mot:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Still the beast as ever and should be down for bhp. Not sure if the camaro will be with us as as well for that as it should be going to Italy, providing money is transferred ok.

Ang
04-25-2009, 08:19 AM
Frustration time is here as still trying to sort out those rear belts and its not something that can be messed up for the mot. Need to get it sorted this week. James has found a place round the corner who can do the mot and tuning on it.

It's been fun with the insurance company and for fully comp we do need an engineers report. What gets even better is that they kept on changing their mind what they wanted it for

Bear this in mind as I think this may be the way forward for insurance companies. Any modifications fitted to a car could end up with a request for an engineers report and it is often written on the mot certificate if an engineers report may be needed. We've had it for our old mazda 323 turbo for modified shocks before. If you add any modifications it may also result in an updated report being asked for. It's their way of covering themselves.

I got asked for one to see if it was roadworthy. I rang up and argued as 12mths mot says its roadworthy :p.

They then said the previous person I spoke to was wrong and they wanted an engineer to list the modifications and make sure they were fitted correctly. I asked for this in writing and received it. I think this is a must as most insurance companies haven't got a clue.

The first company declined the offer to do the report but after ringing my Uncle he gave me a list of numbers in Sussex and found someone who is happy to do it. Not much to do other than list the mods and see if they are fitted correctly.

Most people don't want to put their name to a manta with a 3.5L v8 engine in it (yes it is lighter than the original 2.0 litre) but its chipped as well.

Will get there soon..........

Ang
04-25-2009, 10:08 AM
May have found a way round it for the seatbelts. Most manta owners are giving the standard answer that you can't fit hatch seatbelts into a coupe but on further research looking for new belts they are exactly the same belts but the upper rear mounts are slightly different.

You know how it is where people say things can't be done but never look into it, just accept it

Well one kind manta owner has hopefully solved our problem and all I can say if you read this :respekt::salute: You have made my day so much better :D:D

The sound of that manta being "driven" around the roundabout about 5 mins away is amazing.............so easy now to get the car port doors open ready to put her away, so easy to hear her being driven home. ;)

Never fell out of love with it, now just jealous as James gets to drive it, still can't risk taking it into school, far too loud! :pah:

You worry too much!

:D The only thing I worry about is James sliding it into something hard

You have to hear it to appreciate how loud (oh and amazing) it sounds ....... something tells me that my boss and those above will call me unprofessional. I got told that counting down the days to christmas was unprofessional once! I only put it up on the department board :innocent:

Now do I put up on the board how many days left until I leave :eyes:

They sound a bit boring. Nobody has ever moaned about me taking the Supra to work, but then I've worked in places where people appreciate nice cars I suppose. And that's pretty loud

How long is it? Looking forward to the new job??

Yes boring, all the joy of being a "professional". Some of them are half decent people but torn between the sensible and rebelious line. :eyes:

Only got a few more weeks and then summer hols :yahoo:I start in September.

You've got to laugh in a job like that, or you'd go more mental than you all are already!

Summer hols, very nice!! :)

James is beginning to think the manta hates him, I have trained her well :innocent: to misbehave at every opportunity and to not do as she's told :p

He broke down in her the other day when the clutch pin snapped, even funnier as it was in the road works on the A272, not an obvious car either.

Next thing happened the next day when I gather some strapping "came loose" and caused the car to almost catch fire........it burnt a hole through the manifold. :sign_drama::sign_lol: oh and that's nothing to do with going sideways and loosening off a few things. ;)

Well she came home and James took the manifold to weld and managed to burn his balls :eekout: though that was rather funny :D:D:D

Poor car.:)

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum, its new but getting there, like my car really. Enjoying driving her and yes she might need a little more bodywork but she's an amazing drive.

I still have the supercharger on the side, if you get to read the other threads you will see we have been pretty hectic and just catching up. Great to see that you have a car with some character too........ good choice. :)

There's a big mixture of cars on here, we have a mixture of cars ourselves, all in working progress but that's half the fun. Getting a car that someone would scrap and getting it back on the road.

Anyway please, please, more info on your car!:)

In clearing out the workshop I heard this morning when I was half asleep that James had cleared out some of the recovery truck and found the uprated brakes for the manta that I had forgotten that I had put into the truck when we picked up the black one :innocent::innocent:

He wasn't sure how they had got there until I told him that I remember taking them with the car........how lucky is that!

Still running well but only just coming out to safe driving time:rolleyes: We are after a set of alloys for her with good tyres, the low profile are lovely but not practical for her. You feel EVERY jolt and won't be long before we wreck the alloys.

Still her to stay. Seems we still have a nice collection of cars as well as farm animals ;)

Mot time has come along.......................summer almost here..............got to get road legal again.

Shame as it's just been sorn'd. Still ran pretty much every day around here and much to my disgust James likes to try the occassional rip roaring grass entertainment;)
