View Full Version : Balancer Belt Removal??

I've been thinking of removing the balancer belt on Katt, but was't sure on if there were noticable vibrations or if they are that bad?

I know it gives a good increase in power, but just not been too sure on if it will make it vibrate at low RPM / speed as it is my daily driver, and I do use it for town driving a lot.

All advice greatly appreciated as always

Cheers

You might get a couple of extra bhp, I think most noticable thing will be that it will rev easier a bit like having a lightened flywheel as there will be less rotating mass and less enertia. Probably make it easier to stall as well ;)

I doubt you'll get bad vibrations but I think it will make the engine less smooth. I haven't got experience of them on Honda's but it's only a 4-cylinder so won't be that rough.

Porsche used them on the 4-pot 944 engines (and probably others) to make them smoother like a straight 6, as in larger capacities 4 cylinder engines get less and less smooth.

Fair enough then, spoke to the garage n said that doing this will make the cambelt change cheaper too :D woop!

Well if it's easier to stall then I'll just adjust the throttle response so it's slightly open all the time :) lol

Cheers :)

James says there is not must weight in it and it enables the car to rev much higher because the engine is running much smoother. Haven't seen any evidence to suggest any major gains whatsoever. Wouldn't it be better to run the car on premium unleaded and get a delimiter fitted and make the most of that balancer belt ie let it rev higher with the belt, nice and smooth? :D:p

Premium unleaded (V-power) actually makes my car LOSE power!!!!!!

Dyno'd on 95ron regular with old plugs, old leads, cruddy oil and filthy air filter - 187.7bhp

Dyno'd on 99ron V-power with Bosch Super 4 plugs, OBX leads, new oil and cleaned air filter - 174.8bhp

And is there really any point to removing the rev limiter when my peak power is around 6750rpm???

That assumes you believe the dyno ;)

I have 2 graphs for my car, when it was running an identical setup, both times on V-Power.....one says 282bhp, the other says 309bhp ;)

Was it the same dyno? Mine was done on the same Dyno Dynamics dyno and other cars were run and they were about right.

Though my zorst did come off a few hours after so that may have something to do with power loss.

But if I were you, sick with the 309bhp graph :D

Trust me on this the premium unleaded makes a massive difference (the engine is designed to run its best on a high ron) and so does having a delimiter. Had quite a few preludes now so have some idea.:p Men, never believe the women.

Peak power is way too low for a vtec, there is no way on that peak power that you can keep that vtec kicking in? If its running well you should be able to ride the vtec and keep that beautiful acceleration, had stupid speeds and excellent acceleration from my lude. There is something not quite right with your lude or the dynos are wrong.

It will be good to see your car and see what's going on. Curious now.

Hmmm, so maybe there is something wrong with the way my engine is set up?? Peak power on both runs has been around the 6600 / 6800 rpm mark and I have to rev to about 7000rpm for shifts in order to keep it on the VTEC.

Once the VTEC kicks in I get a boost of power that lasts a few moments and that's about it really, but you can feel the drain in power after 7000rpm.

And FYI, I have no problem believing the women :p lol It's just I didn't see the point in being able to rev my engine to 9000+rpm if the power tops out at less than 7000rpm.

I've attached a copy of my old power run and that downwards line is my air / fuel ratio  messed up or what eh??

Sooooo, what is wrong with Katt's engine eh??

Once we've seen it then we shall know if there is a problem. I think there might not be. Get a delimiter fitted.

Believe me a delimiter is well worth the effort :D. You aren't getting the full fun of the engine with rpm like that. Regularly use premium unleaded to get the best out of it.

Looking forward to seeing her. I am sure she has a lot of potential.

Yeah, but the amount of effort that I'm having to put in and the cost of it all, I keep thinking that I should have just waited a lot longer and bought a Skyline GTR :( She's just annoying me at the moment.

I thought she was running well, but ah well, gotta see what I can get done eh?

Wish I knew something about engines to be able to know what was going on with it.

So I'll talk to the garage tomorrow about a rev delimiter and see what else they can say eh?

Don't rush into it yet. It's something someone on here can help with and save you a bit. Patience, your car is probably running absolutely fine. I am sure lambo lude would have picked up on it if not. He seems pretty good with them.

Only a couple of weeks before the meet.

i removed my belt last year ..more revs slightly less torque
best with lightweight pullys

Oh, in that case if I lose torque then not really best then as I'll need plenty of torque for when I'm in Canada :) Cheers though :)
