Right then. I have been to see the engine and am now all fired up and ready to go! Lets start from the beginning. I have a 1983 (A) Mk 1 Golf. Here she is, not the best pic but i will be posting more as i go along,
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/000168.jpg
at the moment it is only a 1.1c, but hopefully sometime in the next few weeks i will be going and getting this,
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/ABCD0010-1.jpg
a 2.0 16v from a mk3 gti.
I spoke to the guy today, and like me he is a real mk1 enthusiast, so as he has no use for it he's selling it to me for fifty quid!!! steal! it runs perfectly, he fired it up and let it run while i was there, but the plan is to strip it and rebuild it anyway. Another thought i had was to run it on bike carbs. If anyone has ever done this id appreciate any assistance you could give as ive heard it makes it almost lethal to drive!:eyes:, plus it would look awesome with 4 individual little carbs all lined up along the inlet!!!
this will be a veeeerrrrrrryyyyyy long project as im very tight on time and money. but i will photograph everything i do as and when i do it, and i'll put them up here:innocent:, and also keep them with the original documents. so watch this space!!!

Should be a good project!
If you're still going to get it on Sunday I might well be coming with you as I'm knocking about anyway and Mark said he's coming to help! :)

u sure that engine is a 16v ?
looks like a single cam to me
but then im no expert on golfs

oh yes its definately a 16v. it does look like a single cam because it only has the one pulley on the side. both cams are chain driven inside the head. plus the silver inlet manifold that goes over the rocker cover, (then to the throttle body!), has the legendary vw signature, DOHC 16V!!!:d
Macca, yes mark did say today that you would be up for giving us a hand. It would be great if you could, and it would be nice to finally meet you! Were hopefully going up on sunday to get it, but it'll have to be pretty early as my mrs has work around 3.30.

Sunday. Early. Ergh!

And that inlet manifold is a horrible design, nicely heats up all the air as it goes between the throttle body and the inlet ports :(

Ive been away for a while, mostly playing with my new engine!!! Me and T4Mark managed (just!) to get it out of the mk3, after a lot of swearing and throwing of tools!!! Maccas long screwdriver really came in handy!!
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00070.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00071.jpg
Unfortunately we had to drag the gearbox out with it as we could not get it disconnected, its held on with mostly allen bolts which rounded off as soon as look at them!:complain:
I'm not going to use the gearbox as it is far too heavy, has a hydraulic clutch, (as opposed to the cable one allready in my golf) and woul require a new mount in the car:no:
Ill probably be running the 020 box off the mk2 gti 16v. Anyway, :sign_dontfeedmods: got the whole assembly home and got into my shed where i could begin toying with it! First, off came the rest of the inlet manifold, (its in about three bloody bits!),
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00073.jpg
Check out the manky water pipe connection sitting in the middle of the ports! and yes, more fecking allen bolts, and yes 2 of them are rounded!! Next was the rocker cover so i could take a look at the cams,
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00074.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00075.jpg
Nice and clean and oily, can only be a good sign!!! I have since put the cover back on, im not going to start that sort of work untill ive got a stand. The next problem was the f**king gearbox!!! After much looking and thinking, thinking and looking, a few bleeding knuckles, i completely lost my rag and just took the angle grinder to the allen bolts!!!:p luckily they were all on the gearbox side, which i dont need so i went crazy!!! and it worked! and here it is,
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00076.jpg
it came off to reveal a lovely rusty clutch,
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00077.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00078.jpg
and behind that, a BIG flywheel, (obviously!)
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00079.jpg
and thats it so far on the engine front. now im just going to strip the ancillaries from the block untill T4Mark has finished with his stand which he is going to lend me :salute: and i think thats about all i have for now, oh apart from some pics of the wheels i will be running, they came to me on the back of a scrap yards truck, i gave him twenty notes and came home with four of these,
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00066.jpg
they're genuine vw golf wheels, but i dont know which one, some cabbys have them and some mk2 gti's have them, but i know they,re old as two of them are stamped with made in w. germany!!! anyway, after much filing, sanding, sanding, sanding, polishing and painting, two of them now look like this,
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/stealthtuning/DSC00067.jpg
now im not one to blow my own trumpet, but honestly, once i had finished the first one i was quite surprised at just how sexy it looks!!!
Right, im done now! more coming soon! oh if anyone knows of someone who has parts or breaking or anything to do with golfs, mk1, 2, or 3, please message me.
Thank you, and goodnight!!!

oh, by the way, lambo, still think it looks like a single cam?! :tosser:
lmao!!! Im only messing mate. Like i said its easy to see from the outside why you'd get led astray because of the single pulley, and like you said, your not a golf expert! Anyway, once its all finished it'll be a v-tec killer for sure!!!;)

Challenge I think ;) Anything in particular that you are after? Will keep on eye on my many searches. Looks like you've got a lot to do but well worth the effort I'm sure. So what else did Macca do apart from pass the long screwdriver :p
stealthtuning
04-01-2009, 10:27 PM
Mainly a gearbox, like i said an 020 from a mk2 gti 16v or one from a mk1 gti or any really! any tuning or engine bits and bobs. A set of fast road cams, a 4 to 1 stainless manifold and some webers would be great if ya got some ang!!!;) dont know really.
How about a device that wires in all the ecu and sensors at the click of my fingers!:not:
How about a device that wires in all the ecu and sensors at the click of my fingers!:not: That device will be Macca then;)
I will ask around and take a look for the others.

Macca was in Hastings having a right royal fry-up, so the screw-driver was stand in. Si, you don't know how many things that poor screwdriver has done, it's a trooper! Came in a set from ESK for 99p and has lasted through thick and thin to be the loyal green-handled tool you see before you. Yes, it may be broken. And yes, it may be bent but it still works(ish)!!
And yeh, the re-wiring device will be Macca by the looks of it. You should see the mess the impatient git has made of the loom!! lol..

Hello hello! Did ya miss me? Very sorry i missed the first meet. Ive not been too well! Anyway, where am i now, right, since the last update i have dissconected the cylinder head, all the bores are a ok, no lip at the top or anything like that, so for now on the engine side of it thats about it. just waiting untill i can get the head skimmed, new gasket and new bolts, then it can all go back together, i have gone and got some new suspension, lowering springs on bilstein shocks, lovely lovely! and today i have got hold of a complete rear brake setup off a mk2 16v so will be doing a rear disc conversion in the next few days. pics will follow... sometime!!!
Did we miss the vtec killer :taped::whistle:? Yeah we missed you......... can't wait to see what else you will need to do to take on the vtecs

Cool little project, always had a soft spot for the old mk1s. How easy does the engine drop in? any custom bits needed for the conversion?

hey hey!!!! im still here!! yeah it will be a nice project..... eventually!!! lots of things have come up so the golf im afraid has had to take a back seat for now. Yes there is 1 engine mount i need to fabricate and relocate, and i need to either make or buy a custom manifold, (the standard one wont fit as it touches the steering rack, dont think it would put up with over a 1000 degrees of heat for long!!). oh and need a gearbox from a mk2 16v. the one that was on the engine was cable change and hydralic clutch. just easier to stick with whats in there! as far as i know, those are about the only issues ive got. oh apart from the wiring loom for the ecu!!! which i made a COMPLETE mess of when removing it from the donor car as iwe were running out of time!!! but luckily, macca will be on hand to save the day! he has volountered to undertake the mammoth task. so good luck to him!!!!:not:

actually steve, ive had a look through your thread on the nova, that was a fine piece of work!! i must say though my heart sank a bit as i scrolled down and saw the accident damage!!:( and you managed to repair it brilliantly! anyway, i may need to pick your brains when i eventually get round to getting on with the golf:think:
More pics are needed of the car i think lol
My bro has a mk1 convertable, was laid up for years and with some fresh petrol it fired up :D and passed the mot today with a bit of work.
I want one!
