View Full Version : Road speed limits on most rural roads to be cut
Well I am sure most of us will agree with this. The speed limit on some of the rural roads is a bit mad.

http://www.southernpetrolheads.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon13.gif Doesnt sound good! Some 60 / 70 limits should be higher than that anyway, the limit isn't a target so the driver should take caution.
The larger country lanes don't look like they will be affected.
On the smaller country lanes, I think having a 60mph limit on the single track roads is mad, the speed people come towards each other is suicidal. Not only that the other users, horses, walkers etc have a right to use the roads. How can anyone safely go 60 mph on a single track road with no idea of who is coming around the corner.
I agree with this comment
“There are quitea few single carriageway rural roads that are straight and adequately wide, where 60mph – in the right conditions, driving sensibly — is not a problem.
Well that's just my opinion for reducing speed on single track, not necessarily on the rest. :p:p

Stupid British beurocracy at it's best once again. Another pointless waste of time and money. It's nearly impossible to drive that fast down tiny lanes anyway, I don't think it'll make a slight bit of difference.
[Pet-hate Rant]And the sodding horses should get in the fields and on the byways where they're bloody well supposed to be, not walking along the road and moaning at every driver (who pays road tax) that dares to drive past them. Especially when they insist on doing it at rush hours, when it's busy and therefore incredibly dangerous and scary for the horses. But because they 'have every right' to do it, they do it just to be fecking awkward muppets. [/Pet-hate Rant]
And breathe..

I do, yes. But that's not the issue here, it's horses and their dumb riders in the middle of the road. And, the idiot government spending money on pointless crap, again.

do what.. um someone did near me .. remove the 30 speed sighn and swap it for a 40 one :innocent::innocent::D
Take that all back about horse riders. Today on the way to Zoe's first horse riding lesson we had to brake harshly when a horse rider rode across the road at a very slow walk. The road is and should remain a 60mph limit as its straight. :)

What I think is that this isn't that bad really where countries like Norway have a 90km/h limit on motorways (55mph), and I think that lowering them can't hurt.
But I also feel that motorways should be made to 80mph too as this is a safe speed these days as brakes and everything have improved (also think they really need to update the braking distances in the highway code too!!)
As for horses, yes, I totally agree in that they shouldn't be on the roads. Not purely because they don't pay road tax, but mainly because they cause obstructions and are a hazzard to both drivers and normal road users as well as to the horses and riders. I say if you're going to ride a horse, find a field and go for a good old canter!!

Another poxy horse on the way up to the riding stables, brown horse, no reflective gear and difficult to see. Never had problems before I stated that riders had a right to use the roads:rolleyes:

i dont mind horses on the road as long as they use common sense eg..
reflective gear and at non rush hour times ..anyone not doing this is asking for trouble !
where i live i get 100s of runners going against the flow of traffic and wont stop until they are on ya bonnet! ..swarms of bikes lycra wearing shaved legged woofders !.. elderly ramblers waveing there stupid ski sticks and maps!... and epsom evil jockeys all over the road !... lol
ive had one of my 9 lives removed by a 13.5 tonne truck that was to wide for the road and was trying to do the 60mph limit by cutting the corner i was on :(
so tbh i dont think changeing the speed limit will make any difference :)
